Soghaat Anar Dana Powder is best known for lifting a bowl of chaat, adding a sharp, tangy edge to chopped fruit, chickpeas and boiled potatoes. It is a ground spice made from dried pomegranate seeds, giving it a deep reddish-brown colour and a tart, fruity flavour. This powder is a familiar addition to South Asian kitchens, where it is stirred through chana chaat, dahi bhalla and fruit chaat for a sour note that cuts through richer, creamier dishes. It also works well sprinkled over samosas, pakoras and kebabs, or mixed into marinades for meat and vegetables where a tangy finish is wanted without adding extra liquid. Use it sparingly, as a little goes a long way in bringing out its sharp, tart character. It blends easily into spice mixes and chutneys, and can be added at the end of cooking to preserve its fresh, tangy taste. Store the powder in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, in a tightly sealed container to keep its flavour and colour intact. Keeping it away from moisture will help it stay free-flowing and easy to measure out for everyday cooking.
